Benniman has handed over a new multi million pound national distribution centre in the East Midlands on behalf of Clowes Developments.

The contractor has completed delivery of a c.340,000 sq ft storage and distribution unit with integral office space at East Midlands Distribution Centre (EMDC) in Castle Donington.

The £25 million project is located on the site of the former Castle Donington Power Station, which was demolished in the late 1990’s. It involved the reclamation of almost 40,000m3 of concrete by breaking out the water inlets sited five metres below ground level, as well stabilising and remodelling 71,000 m3 of earthworks.

Benniman also delivered external site works, including a new self-contained service yard, 29 dock levellers, car parking, cycle storage, landscaping and drainage works. The project took 60 weeks to complete and was designed by IMA Architects.

EMDC is an established 2.5 sq ft national distribution centre at the heart of the UK, equidistant from Derby and Nottingham, and just two miles north of East Midlands Airport. The park benefits from easy access to the national motorway network via Jct 24 of the M1.

Steven Smith, managing director of Benniman, said: “EMDC is recognised as one of the premier distribution locations in the UK, and we’re proud to have constructed a high-quality new building which complements the wider scheme. We have worked with Clowes Developments on the delivery of several outstanding projects over the years. It is pleasing to have furthered our relationship with the completion of this outstanding new facility.”
